When it comes to flow, lyricism and Hip-Hop MC mastery, look no further than the God Rakim. We can all remember some stand out lines from some of the great word wizards in the Hip-Hop game and guaranteed at least one of those will have been by the genie of the mic, Rakim. While on his European tour last month SoulCulture.TV caught up with the G.O.D. at the Science Of Speech concert in London to ask him of his favourite self written verse.
“My favorite song might be ‘The Punisher’ that I did. My favorite verse might be, ‘Go manufacture a mask show me after / A glass of a master that has to make musical massacres.”
The track The Punisher was taken from his 1992 album with Eric B, Don’t Sweat The Technique. And on justifying why that verse in particular stands out to him, the legendary lyricist explained how it was a new form of rhyming style that he had introduced ;
“Four bars, two bars right there at that time was kind of like a new style to pop off. And for some reason, it was just one of those things that I always felt like ‘Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that’s it right there.’ At certain times, I might feel a different verse or different joint, but coming up, I just remember all the time that couple of bars. I don’t want to be rude, but it kind of made my joint hard.”
Rakim has just finished his European tour, including three Irish dates to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his first album, the classic Paid In Full. He released his last solo album The Seventh Seal, in November of 2009 which was his first studio album in eight years. Rakimstill remains one of the very top lyricists in the game, with a career expanding almost thirty years.
