It hasn’t been the best week for Odd Future when it comes to publicity. Just last weekend rumours were rife over Left Brain, one of the group’s members, allegedly assaulting a photographer in Chicago. Now it has emerged that the controversial group have been unceremoniously booted off the line-up of New Zealand’s Big Day Out, due to the perceived homophobic nature of their lyrics.
The festival, which is being headlined by Kanye West and a number of high profile acts across numerous genres, had originally booked OFWGKTA to perform at Mount Smart Stadium, though a persistant intervention from local residents and activists has forced the organiser’s hand on the matter.
This is not the first time that Hip-Hop artists have been banned from festivals due to homophobic lyrics. Eminem has fallen foul of many Gay Rights groups in the past, as has Dancehall singer Beenie Man, who has had a number of concerts in the UK cancelled. Do you feel people are getting too politically correct about music and censorship, or is it the responsibility of artists to make non-offensive music?
