Young Jeezy recently dropped his latest mixtape The Real Is Back on May 28th. For the first time in over five years Jeezy worked with DJ Drama who hosts the mixtape. As you would expect from these two, this is straight, hard, street edged, trap music that bangs from track 1 all the way through to number 20; a full album worth of street classics.
We all know The Snowman goes hard and this tape is testament to that. Ballin’ featuring Lil Wayne is the first track and accompanied video to be released from the mixtape. Ballin’ is an absolute ‘Banger’ of a track. It begins with a deep but tuned, bouncy 808 drum pattern, laced with sharp strings, giving it that hard core bouncy ‘Trap’ sound that we’re accustomed to with Jeezy.
On the first verse Jeezy kicks off with his usual edgy, street wise raps, and a slow flow but with that subliminal lyrical 2-way like only he can. Mix that with the eerie sound of stabbed pizzicato strings over that sub 808 bass to add to that heavy Southern beat, which makes every word stand out.
Jeezy starts his second verse with a clear stance on where he’s at;
“Still ballin’ like a muthaf-cker, tell ‘em that
Three platinum chains to match my platinum plaques
Ain’t got nuttin’ gold but some gold chains
Say “Jizzle, what’s the dough?”
Move the whole thang”
Verse three gets lifted by a sudden stop to the track which gives Weezy the perfect energy to make his entrance;
“These hoes call me Tunechi baby
N-ggas think they seeing me, they hallucinating”
The track was produced by 20 year old Virginia producer Lex Luger, who has produced tracks for Rick Ross, Wacka Flocka Flame, Wiz Khalifa and more. A video to accompany the track was directed by Colin Tilley and is based around the well known ‘Hood’ movie Above The Rim which starred the late Tupac Shakur.
Judging by the standard of this track, it would not surprise me if Ballin’ makes the cut on the long awaited TM103. album.
