Ten years ago if someone told you a blonde Australian woman would win Best Rap Artist at the American Music Awards, would you have believed it? Well it’s happened. Iggy Azalea has picked up two massive awards at the 42nd American Music Awards while Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, and A$AP Rocky performed live at the ceremony.
While some eyebrows may be raised this morning at who picked up the gongs, in reality there was little surprise when Iggy beat out both Eminem and Drake in the Favourite Rap Album and Rap Artist categories. Prior to the event Azalea had been nominated for 6 awards, the most nominated of all artists.
Speaking on the win, Iggy said:
“This award is the first award I’ve ever won in my entire life, and it means so much to me that it is for best Hip Hop because that’s what inspired me to move to America and pursue my dreams, and it’s what helped me when I was a teenager to escape and to get through my life and to better times. It means so much that I can stand here against Eminem and Drake and come out with this.”
