Following his first live performance in over a decade at the Grammy Awards this month, Dr. Dre has released the highly anticipated video for “I Need a Doctor”. It is the second single to be released off his upcoming Detox album and features collaborations from his protege Eminem and singer-songwriter Skylar Grey. Produced by Alex Da Kid and directed by “Menace II Society” and “Book of Eli” film-maker Allen Hughes; the video premiered yesterday on MTV.
The 7 minute video opens with flashback scenes of Dr Dre‘s musical past right before he becomes involved in a horrific car crash. The video then fast fowards to a hospital scene ten years later, where Eminem professes loyalty to his mentor and urges a comatose Dre to recover. As the video reaches Dr Dre’s closing verse, the veteran rapper and producer has finally awakened; returning back in fighting form. The video depicts a personal account of the Dr. Dre’s 25 year career in the hiphop industry, and features archive footage of his N.W.A, Death Row Records and Aftermath days. The closing scene features Dre visiting the grave of his N.W.A counterpart Eric “Easy E” Wright, who died of AIDS in 1995.
