Lil Mama, the rapstress who famously sang about the mass appeal of her lipgloss, recently remarked about the similar effect her style has had. Speaking to VIBE.com , the former Jive Records artist, answered a question about adorning the supposedly token, “Harajuku Barbie” Nicki Minaj hairdo, at the MTV Music Awards.
The style which comprises of a sharp bleached blond bob has become a trademark for Minaj since her rise to international stardom. However, Lil Mama disputed the notion that this haircut was an original style adorned by her Minajesty. Describing her ‘do, Mama remarked; “My cut is blunt and futuristic and Nicki Minaj started wearing that bob on her head after she came to my show. So at the end of the day I know what I do and I know what I possess and I know who I am. I’m a trendsetter.” She went on to comment on the complimentary nature of imitation; “The biggest form of flattery is imitation so I’m flattered.
Modest Mama, a judge on ‘America’s Next Best Dance Crew’, continued to express her disdain over the mane misconception, stating, “She was a guest on ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’ and immediately afterwards, everywhere she went, she was wearing the haircut, the same exact way.” Lil Mama concluded her declaration, reiterating how flattered she felt, “She imitated me and it felt like something that I was doing was cute and in time for the fashion and for the season, so it’s like, let’s live, let’s do it.”
Lil Mama was clearly aggrieved over the theft of her original hairstyle. Luckily for Nicki Minaj she won’t need to steal any musical material from Mama. Her debut album ‘Pink Friday, was certified platinum in April 2011.
