Lil Wayne has had a tough time of it lately, being cast in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, with his poorly thought through lyrics on Karate Chop drawing disgust from all angles. The latest detractor is cultural icon Stevie Wonder who made public his blatant distaste for the Emmett Till lyric.
The lyric in question is on the Karate Chop remix, where Wayne says he “beat that pussy up like Emmett Till”, something that drew anger from all those familiar with the case. Wonder didn’t mince his words, saying that the YMCMB rapper had gone too far by comparing the racially motivated murder of Till to sex.
“You can’t equate that to Emmett Till. You just cannot do that,” Wonder said. “I think you got to have someone around you that – even if they are the same age or older – is wiser to say, ‘Yo, that’s not happening. Don’t do that’…sometimes people have to put themselves in the place of people who they are talking about. Imagine if that happened to your mother, brother, daughter or your son. How would you feel? Have some discernment before we say certain things. That goes for me or any other writer.”
Till’s family were equally enraged, releasing a statement condemning the song and demanding an apology from Lil Wayne. Epic Records has pulled the “unauthorized” remix and issued an apology.
