Seems that the trend of suing rappers is certainly catching on! After Lil Wayne‘s numerous court dates, rumors are circulating that a lawsuit is coming at Kanye West and Jay-Z from veteran soul singer Syl Johnson for an uncleared sample of Johnson’s “Different Strokes.” The sample is used in the track “The Joy,” from the deluxe edition of the number one album Watch the Throne.
The publishing company Numero Group deal with most of Johnson’s catalog, and according to reports, Island Def Jam originally contacted the label to clear the sample but it was for West’s 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. When the song was not used for Kanye’s album, Johnson was shocked to see the song on Watch the Throne and the wrong copyright holders credited in the album’s liner notes.
“Hey @kanyewest & @JayZ, thanks for illegally sampling Syl Johnson on “The Joy” and then crediting us(?). Have your lawyers call our lawyer,” a tweet read from Numero Group about a possible lawsuit.
Lets see how this one turns out for the two rappers.
