Kanye West has signed two Nigerian rappers to his G.O.O.D Music family, which is also home to artists such as Pusha T, John Legend, Common and Big Sean. D’Banj and Don Jazzy have been on the Rap scene for years, selling out shows in Africa and Europe well before Yeezy took interest in the talents. Now they hope to get recognition in the U.S. with Kanye on board.
Dapo Oyebanjo, stage name D’Banj, was already a nationally acclaimed rapper winning Best African Act at the 2007 MTV Europe Awards and Artist Of The Year at the 2009 MTV Africa Awards. He already has three albums under his belt ‘No Long Thing’¸ ‘Rundown Funk Up’ and ‘The Entertainer’, even featuring Snoop Dogg on his latest single ‘Mr. Endowed’. D’Banj was also nominated in this years BET Awards in the Best International Act Africa category.
“Lord I thank you for being So GOOD to us. On such a special day u have decided to humble us more! I’m speechless. Congrats Bro.. It’s TIME,” wrote D’banj, whose birthday fell on the day it was confirmed he had signed with G.O.O.D Music. “Just like yesterday myself and my brother did Tongolo. 7yrs later Mo’ Hits signs with Good Music. Best birthday gift ever. God thank u.”
Don Jazzy, born Michael Collins Ajereh, is the CEO of his own record label, ‘Mo Hitz Records’, a roster full of talented acts like D’Banj, but when West offered him a deal, the 28-year-old jumped at the opportunity to link up with the rap superstar.
“Thanks for ur love and prayers always. Now we can hear IDJA from the world’s finest Stars. Thanks again its Naija,” wrote Don Jazzy via his Twitter account.
Apparently Kanye was chasing the signature of the two emcees for quite some time. D’Banj’s manager, Sunday Are confirmed the rumors stating, “Yes, there have been discussions between the two parties lately. They have been exchanging contracts but now the wait is over.”
Is the US ready for D’Banj?
