It’s been a big week for Cash Money and Young Money artist Lil Wayne with the release of his much anticipated album the Carter IV. Over in America it was announced that Lil Wayne’s first week record sales came in at 964,000.When it was relesed on iTunes he broke the first week iTunes record sales, selling 300,000 copies in the digital store within the first four days of availability.
Internet bloggers went nuts speculating about how an album that was leaked 5 days before its release could do them numbers, and fingers where pointing at Lil Tunechi’s record label with some saying they must have purchased extra units to try to push the album past the million sales mark.
During a recent interview with Shade 45’s “Sway In The Morning” Cash Money Records head Bryan “Birdman” Williams is denying rumors that Cash Money bought copies of Lil Wayne’s latest album saying that it would be ridiculous for his label to take such an approach.
“Nah, man, that really don’t make no sense. Why would we do that?” he said.
“I press and distribute ’em. Ain’t no need for me to buy ’em. That’s hustling backwards; we ain’t in it for that. I ain’t ever been a part of that type of scheme to be buyin’ records. We don’t do that, homey. We be working too hard to be — that don’t go with what we do. We truly what we do. We’re real about what we do, we work hard every day at it, and we work for the people. That’s what we do music for: for people. And we appreciate the love they give us back. But no such thing as me buying no CDs. I wouldn’t even play it like that.”
Just a reminder, remember back in June Birdman placed a $2 million bet on the Miami Heat to take the NBA Finals series and LOST, so whats a few hundred thousand dollars to a man who Forbes ranked in the top 5 of their “Wealthiest Hip-Hop Artists”– worth an estimated net worth of $100 million.
Does Weezy have a bigger fan base then the likes of Eminem, Jay-Z and Kanye West? Or did Birdman buy the records? Ether way congratulations to Lil Wayne on his number one album.
