There’s no denying that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have had quite a successful 2013. We can bet that they will not leave empty handed at this year’s Grammys coming this Sunday. The duo has earned seven nominations, the largest number of nominations this year after Jay Z. Among these nominations are “Song of the Year”, “Best New Artist” and “Album of the Year” for which the duo are main contenders.
In one category, however there has been some controversy as to the validity of their nomination. A source from the Grammys Rap Committee has claimed that Macklemore was almost disqualified from being nominated for “Best Rap Album”. The committee has indicated that the duo should not be nominated in the rap genre because “of their success on mainstream radio and their appeal in the pop world.”
The Rap Committee has eventually been overruled by the Grammys General Committee who have decided that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis should be nominated in rap categories. Macklemore himself has come out indicating that Kendrick Lamar is best deserving of the “Best Rap Album” award over him.
“We’re up against Kendrick, who made a phenomenal album. If we win a Grammy for Best Rap Album, hip-hop is going to be heated.” – Macklemore
What do you think? Is The Heist too pop for hip-hop?
